Beat the heat on an ebike

Don't sweat the heat on an Electric Bike

It’s 95 degrees in New York City today. NINETY-FIVE! If you’re riding a bike anywhere today for more than five minutes, chances are you’re sweating through that nice business suit. Only two kinds of people enjoy a day like today:

1. People who are lucky enough to have showers at work
2. People who like to show off their pit stains so they can brag about their “green commute”

Though I usually like to fall into the latter category (working in a bike shop has its perks), I’m not doing much pedaling these days with a broken ankle. So what is it like riding around in this heat wave on an electric bike?

You know that feeling of a carnival ride in the summer? The wind through your hair and the breeze on your face? That’s the feeling of riding an electric bicycle in this kind of weather. Except instead of the smell of cotton candy and french fries, you smell the sweet sweet stench of New York City. Mmm, tasty.

I remember in my biped days, weather like this would cause me to pause halfway through my commute and gasp “water!” In fact, dehydration is a killer in these weather conditions, and not everyone remembers to bring H2O. Luckily, my electric bike did not require enough strenuous energy to warrant a pit stop. Just a straight shot to the bike shop.

The best part about commuting on an electric bike? I don’t need to bring a change of clothes! Despite the casual attire of NYCeWheels, I often found myself bringing a spare T-shirt and a water bucket to wring the sweat out of the one I was wearing. I can’t imagine how I would get around if I had to wear a business suit to work. Rolling up to the shop on my modified eZee Forza electric bike this morning, I had a hint of perspiration. Just a hint. I dabbed my forehead with a towel and I was good to go. Ahh, C’est la vie.

Bottom line: you don’t sweat when you ride an electric bike. Now we’re going to see all you Wall Street execs riding to work in your suits.
