Electric bike models are now available in price ranges from $300 to $12,000. So, the question arises, how much should good quality, but not over-priced electric bikes cost?
Where is the sweet spot if I am looking for a decent quality electric bike but do not want to be paying for technology that I don’t need or is in its early stages (and usually will become much more affordable very quickly).
We believe that quality electric bikes should offer:
- Aluminum Frame (weight is very important)
- Lithium battery by a reputable manufacturer (like Sanyo)
- A state of the art controller (the brain of the bike)
- Efficient, brush-less motor, UL approved charger
- Quality components like shifters and brakes (Shimano, Sram…)
- Available replacement parts (even a Mercedes breaks now and then)
- Supported by a quality dealer network – a must!
Note:
Most electric bikes under $1000 use lead acid batteries rather than lithium batteries.
Electric bikes with bottom bracket motors are great but cost over $2500.
State of the art, hand crafted electric bikes are in the Tesla price range, made for celebrities.
Most typical Chinese made electric bikes leave you to deal with problems on your own, due to lack of quality dealer support.
So where does that leave you?
- Don’t go below $1000 (you are better off keeping your non-powered bike)
- Don’t go above $4000 (unless yo want to rub it in)
- If you must spend more than $4000, purchase 2 electric bikes instead.
- Our most popular Electric bikes cost between $1800 and $2700
