Fixing the Great Mistake of building cities around cars

by Bert Cebular on March 10, 2010

Paul Steely White, Transportation Alternatives director and a NYCeWheels folding bike customer shows how Park Avenue was meant to be and use to be. TA’s summer streets program closes down Park avenue to automobile traffic for 3 Saturdays in August and makes it available for street life. Everyone loves it but yet everything goes back to normal the next day. Summer street should be extended to include Sunday and stretch out over 6 months of the year.

Imagine what a wonderful experience that would be. I suspect that we can add one day of closing per year without anyone noticing too much and would be car free in 7 years. The entire world would look at us as an example of quality urban living.

As we know from experience closing Central Park to cars has been a great success, people that use to be stuck in their cars trying to get to the outdoors 1.5 hours north, now stay right here and enjoy our beautiful park  in the middle of NYC instead.
