Folding Bike, Laptop, and Latte

by Peter on January 31, 2011

Sounds like a good combination right? The laptop is really just a folding computer, and a latte, well… that doesn’t fold but it is delicious (especially soy lattes).

I’m writing this blog because I want to share with you the three things that have changed my life in the past few months. With these three simple tools you can enjoy a full productive day of work without the stress of an office or the misery of solitary cubicle confinement. I’m speaking of course of those items in the title: a folding bike, a laptop, and a latte. Why? Well let me tell you…

My Brompton folding bike and portable office!

My Brompton folding bike and portable office!

Let’s start with the obvious: the latte. No one can deny the scrumptious steamed milk sensation of a well made latte, and with the substitution of soy milk you have a delicious (truthfully), healthy (relatively), and stimulating (literally) treat. And of course most bikers know that coffee and folding bicycles go together perfectly. Why? Because you can take your folding bike right into the cafe with you! At the very least you’ve guaranteed yourself a seat.

Drink your latte, it may be the most important thing you do all day. Once you’ve wrested yourself from the clutches of foggy drowsiness it’s time to get to work, and I do mean “get there” as in going somewhere. Before your can get down to business you have to find your way through all sorts of monstrous trials. Whether it be rush hour traffic, crowded subways, or a local bus that stops twice on every block, getting to work is usually something we all loath, except… if you ride a folding bike!

Personally, my commute is often from home to the coffee shop and I get to enjoy my caffeinated morning cup on arrival. With my Brompton folding bike neatly tucked by my side I can sit at a table all to myself without disturbing others or having to worry about my bicycle falling prey to the cleverest thieves of all, bike thieves. Even if I am sitting at a window looking directly at my bicycle locked up outside I still don’t feel comfortable that it is 100% safe. That’s one of the main reasons why having a folding bike has changed my life.

With my Brompton folding bike sitting quietly beside me I can focus on the task at hand without distraction.

And lastly, the laptop. Here too my reasoning is obvious. Just as the folding bike frees me to travel where I like when I like the laptop frees me to work where I like when I like. It’s a combination that perfectly fits my lifestyle. And how else can you get a days worth of office space in midtown Manhattan with heat, hot water, a bathroom, coffee, high speed internet, and a friendly atmosphere for $5?

So there you have it. The three things that have changed my life in the past few months. It’s all about portability and productivity. You have to be portable to have freedom and flexibility. You have to be enjoy your surroundings and stay organized to be productive.

Think about the ways you could use a folding bike, a laptop, and a latte. I hope it changes your life too.

    Hey Peter,

Any word on whether Brompton is having a US championship race again this spring?

    • http://www.nycewheels.com Mark

      Hey Chris,

Judging from last year’s turnout, I’d count on another race. If you want to sign up with us, shoot me an email and we’ll let you know when registration begins. You can even race with Team NYCeWheels if you want.

Last year’s race was on March 20th, so I’m sure we’ll hear about sign ups soon.

Looks like registration starts on the 20th of February.

Sweet! Are you going Chris? Participating in the BWC is a strict requirement of working at NYCeWheels, but one which we enjoy greatly. Last year everyone (except me, I had just started the week before) went down on the train at the same time and made a bit of a party of it. This will be fun…

            Peter,

I’m planning on going – Mark suggested something about riding with the NYCeWheels crew – I’m game!

Perfect, we’ll probably make concrete plans as we get sooner to the event but we’ll keep everyone posted on our plans for Philly.

      Hi Chris,

I hope they are because I’m going to start training soon. I’m looking forward to that free ticket to England when I win! ;)

    Hey Peter!

Like your article. I love my lattes, which i get on my way from yoga to work. But its too snowy in Boston to ride my Bionx powered recumbent. I wouldn’t stand a chance, and they’d find me frozen in a drift come spring. But, ground hog day is Wednesday, maybe spring will come again!

Today’s the big day, I haven’t heard any news of a sighting though… perhaps we’re in for a long winter.

  • Gerry

I’m sure that’s snow i see out the window of your office.
How’s the winter riding going so far?
Have you been seeing other bike riders during your commutes?

Yes, I too love the smell of latte that first in the morning.

    • http://www.nycewheels.com Peter

Well I’m finding the snowy and icy rides to be a lot of fun, just have to be careful. It’s pretty cool to experience fish tailing on a bicycle but I can’t go as fast as I’d like. Plus, traffic around the city is more hectic than usual. All in all my first winter commuting season is going very well.

The majority of other riders I see are delivery guys. On occasion I come upon another person out to brave the cold, but not too many!

I totally agree with you about the folding computer, the folding bike, and the latte (I like a little caramel syrup in mine).
I don’t have a Brompton though, I have a Montague (you can check them out at:http://www.montaguebikes.com/folding-bike/). Looks like the Brompton folds up smaller, but from the latte angle, I have attached one of these to my bars: http://www.somafab.com/morningrush.html) – so I can caffeinate and ride at the same time…not sure you could fit one on the Brompton though.

We’ve got some of those cup holders at the shop but I’ve been holding off because I’m enough of an addict already. It would fit pretty easily on any bar except for the P-type touring bar, you’d just have to swivel it around when folding.

  • Wesley Smith

I’ve got the folding bike (Brompton), folding computer, and plenty of coffee! Now, I just need the electric part.

Sounds like you’re well on your way, maybe someday… :)

    Hi Peter,
I like your article on how to change a life style.
Since February I have been exploring in a similar manner, but I have been disappointed by the number of technical defects my Brompton has had: two plastic clamps renewed, one of them has just broken a second time, chain jumped off the front gear wheel, rear wheel`s spokes had to be tightened by a mechanic in order to justify the wheel for proper running, front mudgard broke. And still, riding it has been a lot of fun. Presently I am on my way to Paris.
    Best regards, Guenther

      Hi Guenther,
Sounds like a great adventure and to be sure the Brompton has it’s own fair share of issues (though considerably less major ones). How far will you be going over all? Is this a tour your on or just a day or two leisure ride? It would be great if you could post some updates about your Brompton adventures on our Facebook page! Look forward to hearing from you.
