Our Burley Bike Trailer Tropical Holiday

Delicious coconuts delivered on a Burley bike trailer.

There's no substitute for the real thing! From left: Peter, Izzy, Shoi, Gonzalo, and Bert. Mark, ever the dedicated employee was helping a customer at the time of the photo.

Let me tell you the story of this picture. It’s was one hot and steamy week here on the Upper East Side. The AC was running and Mr.Bailey sat chilled out in his backyard mini-bar/doghouse. Bert had been getting us Naked Coconut Water to keep us cool and the NYCeWheels crew seemed to be developing quite an addiction to the natural sports drink. We debated the pros and cons of various suppliers and I compared it to my trip to the Bahamas where I picked them right off the trees. Naked seems to have a good bead on coconut water: no preservatives, sugar, flavors or anything. What could be better? Well… a real coconut maybe but where would we get enough real coconuts for everyone in the shop? And for that matter how would we get them there?

And then it dawned on us: The Burley bike trailer!

It just made so much sense. We started carrying these awesome bike trailers a few days ago and hadn’t had a chance to test them out yet. This would be the perfect trial run (and we get real coconuts too, sweet!).

The Burley trailer I used was the Burley Travoy, a really cool hand truck style bike trailer that clipped right onto the seat post of my Brompton folding bike. It was a lean and fast setup which rolled right over all the cracks and bumps on the 10 mile ride from the shop to Christie st and back. The Travoy bike trailer tracked right behind me as I ride so it was very easy to navigate between cars and manhole covers. I rode at full speed all the way downtown with no problems at all. You can’t do that with every bike trailer, the Travoy handled beautifully.

I didn’t know exactly where I was going but once I got to Christie St it was pretty easy to find a produce vendor who sold coconuts. I wheeled my bike and Burley trailer right into the bay door, stepped up to the man at the counter and bought a box of 9 coconuts for $13! Pretty good deal considering the Naked coconut waters are usually $2 each. While I was paying a guy loaded my bicycle trailer with a box of young coconuts which fit perfectly right between the wheels. I strapped them down with a quick bungee cord and was off. Easy!

I brought my Burley bike trailor right inside the market!

Doesn't that look yummy? And look how the trailor matches my Brompton's raw laquer finish. Nice.

On the ride back I also picked up some bananas but didn’t have enough for a watermelon, sadly. The Burley trailer performed really well on the return trip. A flexible hinge allowed me to easily turn sharp corners and the weight was well balanced and supported on flexible plastic. I almost couldn’t tell it was there because the Burley bicycle trailer was so easy to pull.

When I got back to the shop we celebrated the Burley trailer test ride with a tropical holiday of coconuts and bananas. It’s not everyday that we all get a fresh young coconut to snack on! Just look at those smiles.

I might just have to make this Burley cargo trailer run a regular adventure. Mark was saying he should take the Burley flat bed trailer out with his drums strapped to the back and I take the Travoy trailer with my bass and we can do a mobile jam session as we ride down Central Park west. That might not be the best idea though, seeing as how Mark just got his cast off. We don’t want to go and break his other leg just yet…

Check our website for more info on Burley bike trailers and get stuff done (or relax on a tropical holiday).

Ah nice! I love getting a chance to use cool stuff and Burley has so much to offer. What did you end up picking up with your Travoy?
