Sweet 48V BionX Road Bike Conversion

by Peter on June 22, 2011

It’s been out for a while now and the special edition BionX kit has been making a lot of people smile. I had the pleasure of handing over one especially beautiful electric bike conversion of a Marin road bike just a few days ago. Figured you might like it too in this quick post on a BionX road bike… Check it out:

The Marin BionX bike was particularly intriguing to me as a BionX road bike. Aside from my Brompton, my main bicycle is an old Univega road bike that I’ve updated and made into a pretty formidable commuter/road bike. I appreciate the efficiency and speed of road bikes and find them to be excellently suited to commuting. When you add on top of that a powerful BionX electric bike kit, you get a real work horse that can get you to the job and back again on a daily basis.

This particular BionX road bike has a few really nice qualities.

First off, it’s a Marin, a brand known for quality manufacturing and great parts. This means the frame is sturdy and will last many miles of motorized bicycling. Secondly, it has a 48V BionX PL350HT SL XL kit on board, making it one of the most technologically advanced road bikes out there. Forget about electronic shifting (Shimano Di2) this bike has electronic movement built right in. I can only drool over the thought of taking this BionX road bike out for a nice long weekend ride.

If you’ve been thinking of converting one of your bikes with a BionX electric bike kit consider making it a BionX road bike. It’s one configuration that doesn’t get much press or hype, but it is absolutely one of the best types of bikes to electrify.

Looks great! I’m thinking about adding a BionX kit to my Marin Lucas Valley, but I’m concerned about the rear dropout being only 130mm–which is common to all Marin road bikes–and the bionx officially needing 135mm. I’m curious, which model of Marin bike do you have?

This was a customer’s bike which we converted some months back. I’m not sure now which model it was as I just referred to it as the “Marin with BionX!” With 130mm dropouts it can still work but it will take some muscle power to force the rear wheel into place. This flexes the frame slightly but it shouldn’t be too big a deal. Just be aware the changing a flat becomes a bit more work due to the extra force needed for removing/installing the wheel. -Peter

Thanks. I got the PL 350 installed on my Marin Lucas Valley, no problem, just a bit snug in the back. Works like a charm!
